TM Racing Australia to take positives from Conondale MX National round.
The TM Racing Australia team will take a lot of positives away from the Conondale round of the 2013 Monster Energy MX Nationals held in Queensland on Sunday the 2nd of June.
With both of the teams’ original 2013 Motocross riders, Simon Thomson and Ryan Ziepes sidelined, Nyk Geck stepped in to ride in the MX2 class aboard a TM MX 250Fi.
After not racing a national motocross championship round since 2008, Nyk as expected was a little nervous heading in to Conondale where he would line up against another 39 of the countries best MX2 pilots.
“It was good to be back out there, I was a little nervous in the morning, but once I was out on track I was fine and felt pretty much at home,” Nyk stated at the end of the day. “The track was hard during the practice and qualifying session, we were the first out on track and it was pretty wet and muddy.
“After qualifying it come up all right, it was still pretty slippery for the first race. But I did not mind it honestly, it formed deep ruts and become technical and kept riders honest all day.”
When Moto one got underway, Nyk got off to a mid pack start, before working his way to as high as fourteenth spot, which was well inside his aim coming in to the round to run inside the top twenty.
Unfortunately for the 23 year old, a crash in one of the deep muddy sections of track cost him valuable time and positions and seen him dropped back outside of the top 30 and outside of a points paying position. Nyk dug deep and by moto end was able to move back to 29th position and score TM their first MX Nationals championship points of 2013
“I was feeling good in the first moto, I felt as though I could keep up with the top 15 on track, which was well with in my goal coming in to the round,” Nyk explained. “I think I was up around 14th for awhile and was feeling fine.
“Unfortunately I had a bit of a fall in the mud and dropped a lot of time and positions,” he added.
Moto two was the complete opposite for Nyk as an early race excursion in to the mechanics area seen him drop back to last position and well back from the second to last rider on track.
Nyk once again never gave up and in trying conditions once again raced forward to score more championships points, coming from last up to 28th position by race end.
“In race two I had to quickly duck in to the mechanics area early in the race, which left me well and truly last and a long way off the pack,” explained Nyk. “I felt really good once I got back out on track and was able to work my way back to 28th and score a couple more championship points.
The Ipswich, Queensland based rider will spend the next couple of weeks training hard for the upcoming Queensland state motocross championship where he will ride both the TM MX 250Fi and MX 450 Fi in the Lites and Opens classes.
“I have a couple of weeks away from racing. Then we have the local Queensland titles on up in Townsville where I will ride both the Lites and Opens class.
“I will spend the next two weeks training for that and use that to launch me in to the next National round at Appin,” Nyk concluded.
TM Racing Australia Team owner and manager Andrew Franklin was excited to be back out at the races and have the Italian brand back on the national circuit.
Though the results on paper did not look the best, Andrew took a lot of positives to take away from the day and is already looking forward to the next round at Appin in New South Wales in just over five weeks time.
“It was great to be back at the races, and also great to see Nyk back out racing the nationals for the first time in over five years,” Andrew commented.
“Nyk was out racing his first race against a field of riders who were five rounds deep in to a ten round series, he showed early in the first race that he has what it takes to run inside the top 10-15 and showed great heart to move forward in the second moto under trying conditions.
“We have five weeks now until the next national round at Appin, it will give us some more time to prepare for the second half of the season and along with some practice and some local races here in Queensland, I am positive that Nyk will only continue improve at the final five rounds.” Andrew concluded.
